The tailored trousers by Emilie Pouillot-Ferrand from the Emilie basics collection at La Plage editions.

Emilie invites us to sew a true basic of the women's wardrobe: the tailored pants. A relatively difficult piece that is made accessible to us thanks to Emilie's attention to detail, good fit, and good cut. Indeed, Emilie was raised surrounded by the first hands of haute couture workshops, and this is felt both in the cut and in the precise explanations. In fact, she made more than 10 muslins to achieve the result presented here!

Emilie offers us a well-constructed and educational technical and explanatory booklet.
Indeed, she invites us not only to discover the different types of fabrics that can be used to make the tailored pants but also to understand their manufacturing process, their drape, and in which season this type of fabric is recommended.
She also advises us on:

  • the haberdashery materials to use,
  • how to read the pattern,
  • cutting the fabric,
  • ironing.

A whole part of the technical booklet is dedicated to pattern modifications to adapt it to one’s body shape. The methodology is extremely well explained; which should be emphasized.

Finally, a section "little extras to master" helps us achieve the finishes that will make all the difference between roughly made pants and high fashion quality pants. Here we find advice for notching, applying bias tape, customization with contrasting facings, or by adding piping.

The assembly instructions for the pants are very complete. Thus, we first find the pieces that need to be overlocked. Each assembly step is detailed with simple diagrams and well-provided explanations. The color code for the right and wrong side of the fabric is clear. The assembly of the fly, the most difficult step, is well explained with 10 schematic drawings.

The pattern sheet is made of good quality kraft paper, the pieces are printed in black. The sheet is very readable since only one pattern is represented. Sizes from 36 to 46 are identifiable via the pattern of the line used. A significant advantage of this pattern is that the seam allowances are included (1 cm for seams and 3 cm for hems); this saves time during the tracing phase.
The sizes offered range from 62 to 66 cm for size 36 up to 88 to 90 cm for size 46. Regarding the hip circumference, the measurements range from 88 to 92 cm for size 36 and between 108 and 114 cm for size 46. A cutting plan is provided in the technical booklet.

I really enjoyed sewing this pattern which was the second pair of pants I ever sewed! I am very satisfied with the result and received many compliments.
