The Bodysuit by Marie from Marie Poisson in the basics collection at La Plage editions.

The Bodysuit... a garment on the border of underwear. The bodysuit is an ultra-feminine piece that can be worn during the day with a pretty skirt or under jeans, or in the evening when it becomes more glamorous with lace. Marie Poisson guides us in making a bodysuit offered in 2 versions:

  • the Ivonic model with its high-cut briefs and spaghetti straps
  • the Lizaig model with a wrap neckline and ¾ sleeves.

The briefs (shorty and high-cut) can be swapped between the two models; you just need to make the adjustment proposed by Marie at the waistline. The sleeves of the Lizaig model are also offered in different lengths. Furthermore, Marie suggests customizations by playing with the fabrics used (velvet, lycra, jersey...), with fancy elastics, or by applying lace.

Ivonic

My version of the Lizaig

This pattern and its instructions were a real favourite for me, having never sewn an underwear piece before. The basics of underwear techniques: elasticated briefs, elastic bias, and laminette... will hold no secrets for you after making this iconic piece of the feminine wardrobe.
Thus, Marie guides us in:

  • choosing the fabric, especially in terms of stretch
  • taking measurements and making adjustments because a bodysuit is an extremely fitted piece, so it is sometimes necessary to make pattern adjustments so the piece fits your figure perfectly
  • notions with the choice of elastics and snaps needed
  • sewing stretch fabrics (stitches, single and twin needles...)
  • sewing lace, lingerie elastics with picot edges, elastic bias
  • finishing the gusset (snap closure).

The instructions are clear and the assembly steps are detailed with simple diagrams.
The large pattern sheet on good quality paper is clear. It is very easy to identify the pieces and cherry on the cake... the seam allowances are included. This saves some time on tracing but also ensures the correct seam allowance measurements suited for sewing elastics.

Finally, Marie gives us the gift of offering this model from size 34 to size 52! It is rare to find patterns graded beyond size 44. If your bust measurement is between 79 and 124cm, your waist between 59 and 103cm, and your hip between 81 and 124cm, go for it and discover the joy of sewing this staple!
