Making your own pompoms is easy!

I made you a tutorial on scarves, shawls, and snoods a while ago. I thought it would be nice to complement it with homemade pom-poms like Céline did on her scarf with the little foxes.

So, let’s get started with the homemade pom-pom tutorial!

In the creator’s basket, you will find

  • Cardboard or cardstock
  • Embroidery thread or wool depending on the desired look
  • One bead per pom-pom.

The tutorial

1. Cut the cardboard so it is 6cm wide

2. Wrap the embroidery thread around the cardboard several times depending on the desired pom-pom thickness.

3. Cut the thread once you have the desired thickness

4. Cut a piece of thread. Pass this thread between the wrapped threads and the cardboard.

5. Tie a knot centered on the edge of the cardboard

6. Once the knot is tied, gently slide the threads off the cardboard towards the outside

7. Secure the knot by tying a second knot over the first

8. Thread a bead onto the threads so it sits above the knot

9. Make several knots above the bead to secure it firmly and prevent it from moving 10. take another piece of thread and tie a knot 1cm below the bead. This will be the "head" of the pom-pom 11. cut the thread ends and the loops at the bottom of the pom-pom, even them out Ta-da, your first pom-pom is finished. Make 2 more for the other two points of your scarf.

How to place your pom-poms on the scarf?

When sewing your scarf, place each pom-pom on one of the three points of your scarf. The pom-poms are placed on the right side of the fabric, with the fringes facing inward.

Spread out the threads on top of the pom-pom well; these threads will be sewn during the scarf assembly and will hold your pom-poms in place (leave about 3cm of thread between the tip and the start of the pom-pom).

Next, sew the lining and the main fabric of your scarf together, right sides facing. Now just follow the instructions from the previously published tutorial ;-)

And ta-da, once your scarf is turned inside out, your pom-poms will be facing the right way!

I can't wait to see your creations!
