Need sweatshirts? I sew Butterfly from Clematisse Pattern and I use up my scraps!

Some time ago now, the lovely Clématisse Pattern brand arrived at the store.

It must be said that Céline, the designer, offers feminine and stylish models that always have a little original touch but are wearable every day.

You’ll find models that trendy ready-to-wear brands could have put on the market. It’s great to be able to sew them ourselves without spending a fortune!

In short, I knew I was going to make several models from the Clématisse pattern. Given the season, I started with the Butterfly model, an original and trendy sweatshirt!

I invite you to discover it!

The model

Butterfly is a stylish sweatshirt featuring an original cut design as well as sleeves made of beautiful pleats. The designer has infused it with femininity by beautifully highlighting the female curves.

Butterfly invites you to express your individuality in a look that is both chic and casual.
Customize it as you wish and play with your creativity to mix colors and use your fabric scraps! Go for a tone-on-tone palette, dare to contrast intense shades, or simply choose plain.

Finally, you can enhance its uniqueness even further by adding a buttoned tab to its pretty sleeves or keep a cleaner style with a simply hemmed cuff.

Practical information for sewing Butterfly

The Butterfly sweatshirt is graded from size 34 to 48, which corresponds to a bust measurement between 82 and 110cm. Since this model is fitted, I also recommend checking the hip measurement to avoid feeling tight around the lower hips if you don’t like that.

This pattern was designed for a height of 1.65m. If you are taller, feel free to lengthen it.

The pattern is available in PDF format and as a printed version in the shop or via our webshop.
Seam allowances are included in both versions and there is no overlapping of pieces on the pattern.

Additionally, a video tutorial is available. It will help you create your project easily, without any hassle!

This sweatshirt is assembled with a serger.

If you don’t have a serger, you can just as well sew it with a sewing machine using a stretch stitch and a special jersey needle size 80 to 90 depending on the thickness of your sweatshirt.

Difficulty level and technical points

The Butterfly sweatshirt is relatively simple to assemble and could be your first sweatshirt if you are a beginner.

The technical points are:
- assembling the cut pieces
- sewing the sleeve pleats
- assembling the sleeves
- attaching the neckline band
- the wrist slit (optional)
- the hem at the bottom of the body and sleeves

My supplies and modifications

I chose to sew Butterfly in a size 36, referring carefully to the size chart.

I selected the tricolor version because I wanted to use scraps from my stash.

I chose to do a simple hem for the cuffs.

I quickly assembled the PDF version and cut my pieces directly from the paper; in just about an hour.

I wanted to have the shapes of the pieces available to test if they would fit into my scraps.

Then, I started searching for scraps in my stash. If you came to the shop this week, you saw I’ve been busy tidying up 😂 This tidying helped me find several pieces that were waiting for their moment!

I knew I wanted to cut a piece of Nerida Hansen’s large flower sweatshirt fabric that was calling out to me in the shop... So I needed scraps in the same tones, and I quickly found a very beautiful khaki and plum that matched perfectly.

All that was left was to decide the placement of the colors and fit the pattern pieces according to the scrap pieces.

I chose to work with ribbing for the neckline band and picked the same shade as the plum sweatshirt.

Since I found the sweatshirt a bit short for my taste, I decided to add a bottom body band that echoes the neckline band. This band better matches my look and desires for a sweatshirt.

My sewing experience

After assembling my pattern pieces and cutting my fabric pieces, I moved on to assembling the sweatshirt itself.

And there’s no denying it, assembling a sweatshirt on the serger goes fast!

In 1 hour and 30 minutes, the sweatshirt was assembled!

In the end, it’s the ironing and the bottom hem that take a bit more time. I took the opportunity to use my coverstitch machine to create even more beautiful finishes.

I found Céline’s explanations appropriate and sufficient to complete this project, and for those who want, there’s even a video tutorial!

Well, there’s no denying it... I love my sweatshirt with its beautiful big flowers!

And if, like me, you want to sew your sweatshirts on the serger, why not come to our serger introductions to learn how to master this beautiful machine?
