Last week we talked about gifts for adults (and a bit for kids). This week, I suggest doing the opposite with 10 tutorials to sew gifts for little ones, and rest assured, some also work for older kids!
Let's go, here we go!
1. Christmas stocking or pouch filled with candy or small toys
There are many tutorials to make this kind of project. I selected the one by Elsa from Urban Fairy pattern which is simple to sew and follow.
Plus, the pattern is free and directly downloadable from the YouTube video link.
It's also a great project to customize, for example by adding the child's name (or the adult's, since it's also a great family gift 😊) on the boot. You can embroider it, applique it with fabric, or use heat transfer vinyl...
And then, just fill it with sweets and/or small gifts: wooden animals, blocks, Playmobiles, Lego, Pokémon cards... it all depends on the child's or adult's age 😊.
2. A small cat hat
More suitable for little ones, this very cute cat hat will be very useful for the autumn/winter season for our dear little blond heads. It is available for free on Perlipo's blog from newborn size to adult size 56 (and yes, why not?).
It's a small, easy project that uses very little material.
To make it, you will need:
- between 25cm and 40cm of warm fabric for the outside (minky, sweatshirt fabric…)
- between 25cm and 40cm of cotton for the lining
- KAM snaps or a button
- matching thread
You will find all the necessary materials in the shop.
3. A bunting garland to decorate the bedroom or playroom
Baby, children, or even teens, the pennant garland always works well if you choose the fabric pattern carefully. Little animals, flowers, favorite heroes (Harry Potter, Cars, Paw Patrol...), ... you will find beautiful poplins in the shop to create lovely garlands to suit your children’s tastes.
This allows you to decorate a room above the cradle/bed, a child’s or teen’s desk, or a playroom. It’s also an easy project to make even for sewing beginners; you can also make them with your children (for example, to make a gift for a little brother or sister).
To make it, you will need:
- cotton poplins
- cotton bias tape
- matching thread for the chosen bias tape
4. Cushions with fun shapes
It’s a super simple project but one that can be very appealing to parents and children.
Anything is possible from the simplest to the most complex, with a little imagination!
I have selected for you the cloud cushion tutorial which is very simple to make; you can complete it in about an hour. It is available for free on the jolitipi blog.
Nothing stops you from creating your own shapes: stars, moon, animals, flowers... All you need to do is create your pattern. You can sew it in cotton poplin but why not in other fabrics like sweatshirt fleece, cotton jersey or minky? Everything is possible with this kind of project!

5. A cat pouch from l'usine à bulle
I find this pouch very cute for a little girl as well as for a lady who loves cats 🐈⬛
I chose to present to you the tutorial from the brand l'usine à bulle which is very well done and free!
The necessary materials:
- Cotton poplin or double gauze
- Lightweight fusible interfacing
- Resin snap fastener
- A piece of thick thread or fine wool
- 20 cm zipper
- Matching thread
6. A Snowflake Pajama from Urban Fairy Pattern
Elsa created pretty pajamas for children (unisex) aged 2 to 12 years. The PDF is available on her website for €6.90.
The expected sewing skill level to sew these pajamas is 2 out of 4; confident beginners or intermediate. You can sew them with a sewing machine or an overlocker.
You can make this pajama in cotton jersey, viscose jersey, French Terry, sweatshirt fabric, fleece for the whole pajama set. However, you can mix fabrics and use one of these materials: cotton poplin, cotton lawn, double gauze… for the pajama bottoms.
You will find all the necessary materials to make your pajamas in the shop.

7. A princess tulle skirt
I chose the Swan model offered by P&M patterns, you can find the pattern to download here.
It is available from size 2 years to 10 years but it’s not hard to enlarge it for older princesses.
8. A child’s snood
I suggest the video tutorial by Julien from Couture Enfant who offers us a snood to sew in three sizes: baby, child, and adult.
Super simple to make and very quick, it’s a project that will suit beginners in sewing.
9. A rabbit comforter by Lucatine
I found this rabbit comforter so cute and the tutorial is really well explained by Lucatine.
You can customize your rabbit to make a "mister" rabbit or a "miss" rabbit by adding a bow tie, a little skirt, and choosing your fabrics.
The pattern is available for free download in the Youtube video link.
10. a tipi / a hut
A more ambitious project but quite doable and above all really enjoyable for children: the tipi hut!
For making this pretty Indian hut, you will need
- some fabric (160 x 280 cm) thick enough like cretonne or canvas
- 2m of bias tape ,
- a bit of suede fabric for decoration if desired
- 5 wooden slats of 2 m in pine
- some rope
- some sewing thread in a color matching the fabrics.
The tutorial comes from La Cour des Petits and can be watched here

There you go, I hope you were able to find something you like among these children's gift ideas. Feel free to take a little tour in the shop to choose your supplies for making them.
Get your needles ready!
