The puffed sleeves add a romantic touch and bring a subtle chic note.

Additionally, you can choose between two sleeve lengths: the flared 3/4 sleeve for a touch of bohemian grace or the long sleeve with a buttoned cuff for timeless elegance. In the video tutorial, you'll also find a version with an elasticated and smocked cuff for a more romantic style.

This dress pattern comes in short or long versions, depending on your mood and the occasion.

The long version features slits on each side, creating a graceful movement with every step and highlighting your lovely pair of boots for a complete bohemian vibe.

In the seamstress’s basket

To sew Calista, you should select a woven fabric. This pattern is suited for soft and fluid fabrics: crepe and poplin viscose, cotton satin, lyocell, ...

To sew Calista, you will need:
 -Fabric 140cm wide:

 1. Short dress version:
from size 34 to 40: 2.30m long sleeves; 2.20m for 3/4 sleeves
from size 42 to 48: 2.60m long sleeves; 2.50m for 3/4 sleeves

2. Long dress version:
from size 34 to 40: 3m long sleeves; 2.90m for 3/4 sleeves
from size 42 to 48: 3.30m long sleeves; 3.20m for 3/4 sleeves
-Fusible interfacing : 60cm
-50cm smocking elastic or classic elastic ribbon 4cm wide
-6 buttons of 10mm for the long sleeve version
-1.30m of piping for the underbust cut (Optional)
- a matching spool of thread

Technical points and difficulty level

Calista is designed for fluid fabrics, so one of the main difficulties will be working with a "living" material less obedient than cotton poplin or canvas

Nevertheless, it’s a great challenge for sewists who are starting to gain experience!

The technical points for sewing Calista are:
- making a V-neckline
- possibility to fully line the dress
- assembling the sleeves (and cuffs depending on the chosen version)
- creating smocking or using a gathering elastic
- adding a belt with piping if desired
- making a slit in the skirt if desired
- hems

Sewing experiences

Céline made a size 36 in the long version without slits and with long sleeves with buttoned cuffs.

Céline chose a coupon of 3m of viscose plumetis and lined the skirt with a cotton voile.

"Great project, quite quick once the belt is in place, it’s almost finished!

I am delighted with my dress which gives me a beautiful silhouette. I also appreciate the versatility offered by this model, the choice of fabric which greatly influences the finished project’s look, which can be more chic, bohemian, or casual.

The sleeve and length options make it a great pattern to have because you can really create very different looks depending on the options and fabric chosen.

The choice of shoes and accessories can also offer two different looks with the same dress:

- with ankle boots, you get a comfortable dress and a casual or glamrock look
- paired with heels, you have an elegant evening outfit
I also imagine it well in a plain viscose jersey for a fluid drape and the comfort of jersey—it would make a perfect dress for any occasion.
"

Marie-Hélène is very happy with her Calista dress.
"I made it in Mind the Maker's Eco-Vero viscose twill Stalks lilac that I adore! (I bought 6m to make 2 dresses and Calista is the first!) The fabric is quite supple while having good structure. Twill is a slightly thicker fabric, so it's perfect for winter dresses like now.

For a festive touch, I edged the top of the waistband with a silver aged lurex piping. It adds a little party flair without overdoing it, which will allow me to wear the dress daily as well.

I made the size 36 with no modifications, which is quite rare. Normally, I always have to grade between several sizes to properly fit the bust and hips. Thanks to the empire waist of the pattern and its nice ease at the hips, there was no need to redraw the pattern!

Generally, I tend to avoid empire waistlines (although I love them) because my hips are much wider than my bust. But Calista really creates a beautiful silhouette, well-proportioned and very feminine. This is due to its cut, the just-right amount of gathers on the front, and the casing at the back that holds an elastic to cinch the lower back. For more comfort, I used a smocking elastic, very light and very flexible.

As you can tell, Calista proves you can be well dressed without compromising on comfort! I wore it to a long dance evening with freedom and delight!  Since I'm not a big fan of facings, I finished the neckline with bias tape. I made my own bias tape from the fabric using the super handy bias tape maker. Well, bias tape in viscose was a gamble! To maximize my chances of a nice finish, I fused the bias tape with a light interfacing from my stash and applied straight-grain fusible tape on the garment's neckline to prevent future distortions. It wasn't easy, but my neckline is quite pretty.

So? Convinced? Who will be dressed in Calista for the holidays?
