When our DMC representative came to introduce us to the new collection of Eco Vita naturally dyed organic merino wool skeins, the whole team saw the creative potential behind this new product!
We were first charmed by the eco-friendly production method that respects animal welfare.
Then, we saw the beautiful range of colors and especially what could be created with it!
In short, I had to tell you about it because I feel this new product isn’t getting enough spotlight in other haberdasheries 😊.
So let’s discover this new product that I feel will accompany some of my projects this winter!
What are Eco Vita threads?
Eco Vita thread comes in 16m skeins of single-ply thread that cannot be divided. It is made of 100% organic Merino wool and dyed with natural dyes. It is available in 60 colors with Woolmark Natural Dye Certification. This thread is thicker than classic embroidery floss. Indeed, its thickness roughly corresponds to 3 strands of embroidery floss.
Organic wool? What is it?
Organic wool is a responsible alternative to conventional wool. It meets serious certifications based on high standards to guarantee animal-friendly, planet-friendly, and human-friendly farming conditions.
The characteristics of organic wool are as follows:
- The prohibition of hormonal treatments, which are harmful to both animals and humans
- The use of organic farming areas and responsible pasture management (no pesticides, for example)
- Cleaning the wool according to strict principles before processing (without chemicals, for example)
- The prohibition of mulesing (an unethical practice in Merino sheep farming)
How are they produced and dyed?
What are the production steps?
Step 1 - INFUSION: Using a traditional process, the raw wool is dyed with 100% natural ingredients. DMC worked with a dyer specialized in natural dyeing.
Step 2 - "CARDED" WOOL: The wool is intimately blended to achieve the final color. Dyeing the wool in its raw state rather than the spun thread ensures better colorfastness.
Step 3 - SPINNING: The wool is spun.
Step 4 - SKEINING: The wool is converted into skeins.
DMC made a point of using only infusions of natural ingredients such as walnut, rhubarb, indigo, or juniper. These natural dyes give a soft and warm tone to the color range. I really love it!
What are the uses of these threads?
Eco Vita threads can be used for many creative projects. Of course, they can be used in embroidery, and their thickness can create interesting volume in traditional embroidery. They are also just as easy to use for cross-stitch.
The fact that they are thicker and single-ply can be an advantage for people with vision problems or for children starting embroidery.
They can also be used for mending. Indeed, this wool thread is perfect for darning a damaged or holey sweater or cardigan. It can also be used to cover a worn spot on a sweater by making a small embroidery or a weaving.
These threads are really well suited for decorating knitted garments. You can create pretty flowers, plants, geometric patterns on a sweater or cardigan... by playing with colors, you can create beautiful decorative embroideries.
Finally, these threads are perfect for punch needle enthusiasts!

What do I plan to do with it?
The first creative project I will make with these threads is to embellish plain sweaters. So yes... I bought them because they were plain, but in practice, I don’t wear them because, let’s be honest, patterns are my life!
So I thought adding a pattern (probably floral) will make me want to wear them.
I am also very tempted to use them in traditional embroidery, especially to create volume. There are many stitches that would suit this use very well... I feel like experimenting, and I feel that at the workshop, we will also test them in weaving... We received small looms for repairing snags, and it gives us lots of ideas!
Also, DMC published three project books: two on embroidery, one on upcycling. They are really well made, and I spotted some embroidery and upcycling ideas that really tempt me.
How to care for this thread or your creations?
These are dyed merino wool threads. They can be hand washed at 30°C without risk of fading.
We decided to stock the full range of 60 colors to have the complete palette of these new threads. There are also gift or sampler boxes of 30 colors. I admit I gave in 😂 and bought two books... yes, I know, I’m weak.
You will also find small weaving looms in the shop and beautiful hemp canvases in 4 colors perfect for testing these new threads in embroidery or punch needle.
So ready to try? I am!
