An elegant and feminine blouse for spring: the DP Studio blouse 004

It has been some time now since the French brand DP Studio arrived at C'est du Joly, and I must say I love their patterns. There are always very "couture" details, bold cuts, and always lots of style... As you might guess, several of their patterns are on my to sew list!

After sewing my beautiful birthday shirt, which was a bit complex, I wanted a quicker, simple, and effective project but without sacrificing style, usefulness in my wardrobe, and the joy of sewing!

So I chose to sew top 004, a top with super stylish batwing sleeves that is accessible to beginners wanting to start sewing jersey!

Come on, I'll take you along on my sewing adventure!

The model

Top 004 is a seductive and very feminine top that you will adopt for its optimum comfort, style, and look. With this generously voluminous shape, you will discover the key garment of your wardrobe that will give you complete satisfaction.

Simple to make, easy to wear, this top follows the codes of a kimono composed of batwing sleeves. The waist is highlighted by a high belt.

Its wide neckline allows for easy dressing. A tuck detail is located on the top of the sleeves to add some volume and style to this model. To keep fluidity in this design, it is best to make it in a knit fabric, a jersey, to achieve a beautiful drape especially around the sleeves. Let yourself be seduced by this top, with its sober and elegant look that will suit you perfectly.

In the seamstress’s basket

To make this top, it is essential to choose a knit fabric such as cotton jersey, viscose, bamboo... This top cannot be made in woven fabric.
The material and fabric requirements are:
- 2m at 140cm width (or 3.1m at 110cm width)
- Interfacing suitable for knits: about 0.5m
- matching thread
- matching serger cones (if you use one)

My supplies

For this top, I wanted lightness and softness; so I chose a simple white jersey from the shop.

Choosing a plain white fabric highlights the play of draping and folds created by this pretty model.

Also, I thought a pretty white top with jeans would be a perfect outfit for the coming spring...

I selected G785 interfacing and classic white polyester thread.

Technical points

This top is considered level 1, and I think that ranking is quite accurate.

People who are beginners in sewing knits can give it a try 😊 whether using a sewing machine or a serger!

The technical points of this model are:

- sewing the sides and sleeves (with the notch to create the tuck in the sleeve)

- sewing the facing

- making gathers in the knit

- sewing the belt (and thus taking the gathers into the belt)

- hemming the sleeves

- sewing the tuck in the sleeve.

Nothing too complicated!

My sewing experience

I selected size 38, which corresponds to my size in the DP Studio chart, and I set about taping my paper pieces.
I was surprised when discovering the shape of the pieces and their cutting direction. It actually pleased me to discover new shapes of pieces, new cuts... I was very curious and excited to sew this top! It just goes to show you always learn, despite the years and the number of different pieces made!

I cut my jersey and quickly got to assembling.

I assembled partly on the sewing machine (sewing the facing to the body, making gathers, creating the tuck, hemming...) and partly on the serger (assembling the sides, sleeves, and belt).

It took me about 2 hours to sew this top (after cutting the pieces).

So if you’re looking for a quick, simple piece that teaches quite a bit for those who love pattern making... go for it!

Well, there’s no denying it, I’m delighted with my simple, effective project that gave me a relaxing break in my busy and stressful week!

It just goes to show a bit of sewing is good for life 😊
