I had been looking for a new range of comfortable and practical fabrics for the shop for a while. I am delighted to present the material I chose: Punta Di Roma!
Yes, there are plenty of fabrics on the market but some are adopted immediately, almost instinctively. You know... those materials that reassure, flatter the figure, forgive small cutting mistakes, and above all, make you want to sew again and again. Punta di Roma is undoubtedly part of that category.
Halfway between jersey and woven fabric, Punta di Roma is a must-have in the modern wardrobe and I will tell you why!
Structured without being rigid, stretchy without being soft, it embodies that subtle balance sought by both designers and demanding seamstresses.
So, are you following me on this discovery?
Let's go!
What is Punta di Roma?
Punta di Roma is part of knitted fabrics, and more precisely it is a double jersey. This means it is made up of two layers of interlock knit bonded together (a bit like double gauze but in jersey version 😊).
This construction gives it excellent hold while maintaining comfortable elasticity, mainly in the width direction.
Punta Di Roma is traditionally made from viscose, polyamide, and elastane. This composition offers it a very elegant drape, increased durability, and great wearing comfort... in short, comfortable clothes in which you feel beautiful!
A bit of history: the origin of Punta di Roma
The term « Punta di Roma » comes from Italian and can be translated as “point of Rome”. It is part of more recent textile materials and its name was chosen to highlight the timeless elegance and sophistication associated with Italian textiles.
Indeed, Punta di Roma appeared in the mid-20th century, at a time when the textile industry was looking to develop knits that were more structured and comfortable than classic jerseys. Thanks to double knitting and the introduction of synthetic fibers, this fabric quickly became a standard for elegant but comfortable clothing.
It is in a way a 2.0 version of classic jersey 😊
Did you know?
Punta di Roma is also called Milano jersey or Romanite jersey. So these are not different fabrics but indeed the same cloth.

Have you noticed its very vintage apron?
We love it!
Why choose Punta di Roma?
We were looking for a comfortable knit textile situated between cotton jersey (perfect for t-shirts) and fleece sweatshirts (very warm but not necessarily suitable for more fitted clothing).
Punta di Roma was perfect!
Indeed, the Italians went all out to create a fabric with a flattering fit, comfortable, and stable over time.
It smooths the silhouette, does not mark excessively, and retains its shape over time. These are qualities that the female gender appreciates a lot.
In the qualities of Punta di Roma we will add:
- soft and comfortable
- keeps warm
- stretchy; which will allow us to pull the head through the round neck without needing to open a zipper or buttons
- heavier than woven fabrics or cotton jersey, Punta di Roma has a nice drape
- like other knit fabrics, it does not fray. Finishes are therefore easy to achieve
- it wrinkles very little and is easy to care for, which is a plus!
For which projects to use Punta di Roma?
Punta di Roma is ideal for structured and flowing dresses, skirts, fitted pants, and soft jackets. It allows you to create elegant, comfortable pieces that are easy to wear daily.
Let's not forget that this is a stretch knit, so we will turn to patterns for knits.
I have a few ideas in mind for the patterns 😊 especially for dresses
- Anabelle de Clématisse Pattern,
- Tilly and Fiona by Juliana Martejevs which are superb and quick to sew
- Onyx by Caledonia dreamin, campagna and vesper from the same brand

How to sew it?
You can sew knit fabric in two ways for assembly:
- or with the serger (4-thread)
- either with the sewing machine taking care to use the elastic stitch.
For my part, I prefer to use the serger because it allows very clean, almost professional finishes as it assembles and finishes the edges in one pass.
You will also need to adapt your needle(s) to sew Punta di Roma and choose those of jersey type or stretch type. These needles have the particularity of having a rounded tip that allows the needle to slide against the stitches so as not to break or tear them or make holes in the fabric texture.
Little extra, as I said above, Punta di Roma is stable when cutting and does not curl... Great, isn’t it?
For washing, a machine wash at 30°C, moderate spin, and air drying.
For ironing, a gentle ironing is recommended to preserve its qualities.
A point of attention though due to its weight, it is recommended to dry it flat to avoid marking the fabric.
