I gave in... I sewed the wanted dress by Vanessa Pouzet!

You know my love for Vanessa Pouzet's wanted tee-shirt with its beautiful square neckline. It's my favorite tee-shirt: sensual, without vulgarity, and you can mix it up with retro or even nostalgic patterns 😊

When I saw that Vanessa offered the dress extension with a skater skirt version, I fell for it! I could have drafted it myself but let's give credit where it's due and support creators... I bought it and sewed it right away (for those who read my sewing resolutions article, you know why 😉).

Anyway, this week, we dive into Vanessa Pouzet's world to sew this beautiful wanted dress in the skater version in a wonderful flamed jersey from the Danish brand Mind the Maker that I got from the shop (stock is really handy 😂).

The wanted dress model

To sew the wanted dress, it is necessary to buy the wanted top and the dress extension on Vanessa Pouzet's website. These patterns only exist in PDF version.

So I already had the top, I downloaded the extension sold for €4.90.

The top

The Wanted tee-shirt is available for €7.90 from size 32 to 48, which corresponds to:

  • a bust measurement between 80 and 108 cm
  • a waist measurement between 58 and 85cm.

The dress extension

It is used exclusively as a complement to the top to create 6 dress options with a square neckline. Two cuts are offered: skater for twirling or fitted for a long silhouette.

Three skirt lengths are offered: midi below the knee, short mini, or above the knee. Her 6 dresses can be made with short sleeves, 3/4 sleeves, retro sleeves, or long sleeves offered with the top.

For my version, I chose to cut everything in size 36: retro sleeve top, skater skirt between mini and midi length because I wanted it to fall above the knee (but not mid-thigh).  Note that the seam allowances are included in the pattern. They are 1cm for seams and 2cm for hems.

Wanted is a pattern for knit fabrics: cotton jersey, viscose jersey, interlock, french terry, milano, ... for my version, I wanted a heavy drape and I hesitated a long time between a viscose jersey or a slub jersey... I finally chose the red version of the slub jersey; it will make a beautiful dress for back to school 😊

To sew the wanted dress, you will need:

  • knit fabric: maximum 210x140cm for the straight midi dress with long sleeves and about 300x150/160cm for a large skater dress
  • matching thread or matching cones of thread if you decide to use the serger
  • simple jersey or stretch needles
  • a twin needle if you do your hems on the sewing machine
  • of the laminette if you want to reinforce the shoulder seams

The technical points

Wanted is not too complicated to make but it includes some interesting technical points.

The technical points are

  • assembling the square neckline band
  • assembling the sleeves
  • hemming with the twin needle for the sleeves and the bottom of the dress

Sewing experience: how I sewed this dress

For my part, I decided to sew the wanted dress with the serger for the assembly seams.

I assembled the famous neckline with its square collar on the sewing machine and then overlocked everything to keep the inside of the dress neat.

To finish the hems, I used my coverstitch machine with three needles; I find that the finish is really high quality and professional.

Here is my little back-to-school dress sewn and I love it ❤️ with its square neckline.

I feel like there will be other versions in my wardrobe 😊.
