Sewing duo: I sew two versions of the Eyra shirt from Instinct Couture!

Since the Eyra Shirt by Instinct Couture arrived in the store, I’ve been eyeing it! I knew I would make one or two versions of this blouse.

I really like the different collar options offered as well as the finishes with a hidden button placket; it’s very elegant!

I prepared the pattern in 2024, and a few weeks later, I started not just one but two versions of Eyra!

I share my sewing adventure here!

The model

The Eyra Shirt follows the blouse codes in a modern and feminine way with pretty details and a multitude of options. The shirt closes with a hidden button placket, offering a sophisticated and contemporary silhouette.

The sleeves add a touch of originality; they are puffed and open along the length. They end with cuffs that can be buttoned or tied, as you wish.

What I really like about this model is having so many options and that the combinations are very easy to make; no need to be a pattern genius to have fun!

Information for sewing this model

Eyra is available from size 32 to 52 for a bust measurement between 76 and 120cm.

The bust measurement is the most important to consider when choosing your size.

Seam allowances are included in the pattern and are 1 cm unless otherwise indicated.

Eyra is rated level 3/5 by Fanny, the pattern designer; Eyra is intended for intermediate and above sewers. It is therefore preferable to have already sewn a few pieces before sewing the Eyra Shirt, even though the instructions and video can help you, it remains a piece with quite a few techniques.

In the seamstress's basket

The Eyra Shirt is designed to be sewn in a non-stretch fabric, like any blouse.

Depending on the season and the look you want, you can choose fabrics that are more or less fluid and that crease more or less.

Good options are: cotton poplin or viscose, cotton lawn, tana lawn/liberty, viscose twill, tencel/lyocell/modal, gingham, cotton or viscose crepe, lightweight toile denim, cotton satin, broderie anglaise... etc.

To sew Eyra, you will need:
- fabrics
Short sleeves option: 150 cm of fabric (140 cm wide)
Long sleeves option: 180 cm of fabric (140 cm wide)
With collar, add: 40 cm of fabric
- 80 cm of lightweight fusible interfacing
- 6 buttons (Ø 12 mm) + 4 buttons for the buttoned cuffs
- matching thread
- overlocker option: matching cones

My supplies

I chose to sew Eyra in two different versions and fabrics.

The first was made from a Japanese fabric called Suzume.

The second in an embroidered cotton poplin that I brought back last year from Japan.

The buttons come from my personal collection.

Technical points

Eyra is rated level 3 out of 5 by Fanny from Instinct Couture and I find that quite accurate. Indeed, Eyra has the technical codes of a shirt with collars, button plackets, cuffs...

By sewing Eyra, you will encounter the following technical points:
- sew a facing
- assemble a collar (depending on the chosen option, with or without a ruffle, with or without ties)
- sewing a hidden button placket
- sewing a sleeve with a cuff (according to the open sleeve option, with tear-resistant slit)
- sewing buttonholes and buttons
- hemming

Fanny made an explanatory video for those who prefer videos over the booklet instructions.

My sewing experience

I chose to sew my first version of Eyra in Suzume Japanese cotton. I chose the open sleeve version with sleeve bands and no collar. I chose size 36, which matches my measurements, and lengthened the sleeve by 5cm.

For the second moss green version, I chose the Peter Pan collar version with ruffles and ties. I kept size 36 but added ease to the back shoulder width to be more comfortable when lifting fabric rolls 😂.

For the second version, I chose to edge the facing with bias tape for a more elegant finish on the blouse.

I also made French seams on the sides.

I decided not to leave the sleeve completely open on the side but to close it. I should have done this when cutting the fabrics, but it was while trying on my second version that I changed my mind 😊.

I also decided to make an elastic cuff on this second long-sleeve version because it's more practical for my life at the shop.

I have to say I'm really a fan of the little ruffled collar I made; I find it really adorable.

I must warn you that assembling the ruffled collar with ties is not an easy step because there are many layers, and it's necessary to carefully follow the notches to then be able to make the button placket. If you are still a sewing beginner, know that this is not the simplest option of Eyra.

I really appreciate the two versions I sewed for myself.

There you go... will there be a third version of Eyra? Surely!

I'm going to see how this one fits into my wardrobe, but I have no doubt I'll wear them a lot this spring!
