Last week was Valentine’s Day, and we took the opportunity to make heart-shaped decorations. These will join the workshop sofa and serve as fun, colorful cushions throughout the year because, at the risk of being cheesy, love is celebrated all year round. Plus, we want all the creations that come out of the workshop to have a more lasting purpose over time... so these hearts turned into cushions are perfect!
We invite you to make your own with our tutorial. Small hearts, big hearts... you can make whatever you want!
For this tutorial, the workshop scrap bin was quite busy, so why not use yours! You might even recognize some of the fabrics used from my previous projects like the red corduroy velvet from my Cléo dress by Fibremood.
Alright, let’s get started with the tutorial!

Materials needed to create your pattern
To make the heart cushion pattern, you will need:
- a plate, a glass, ... something round
- a ruler
- a pencil
- paper or cardboard
First step, draw a straight line that will be the center of our heart.
Second step, place the round object to draw the upper curve of the heart
Third step, draw a line from the "end" of the round shape down to the bottom of the heart
Fourth step: draw the "on fold" symbol along the center line of the heart; this will allow you to have perfect symmetry when cutting your pieces on the fold.
Fifth step: cut out the pattern (you will have a half-heart shape on paper)
You can make hearts more "rounded" or more "elongated" depending on your taste by playing with the object used but also the length of the center line. Be creative!
Materials and supplies to make your heart
To make the heart, you will need:
- fabrics — now’s the time to use your scraps
- matching thread
- stuffing
- good scissors, a hand sewing needle, pins...
If you want, you can create cutouts like we did to insert piping, but you can also add ribbons, lace appliqués...
Assembly steps
1. Fold your fabric on the fold (the grainline is parallel to the center of the heart)
2. Place the pattern along the fold
3. Pin and cut the first piece
4. Repeat the first three steps to have two hearts that will form the back and front.
5. Pin the two hearts right sides together
6. Stitch the two hearts together with a 1cm seam allowance, leaving an opening along a straight line to insert the stuffing
7. Clip the top of the heart
8. Turn the heart right side out through the opening
9. Add the stuffing through the opening
10. Close the opening with an invisible stitch (by hand).
Ta-da! The first heart is finished!
Customize your heart
You can customize your heart.
You can create cutouts (like we did) to insert color strips or add ribbons, lace by sewing them on top. Be sure to sew these additions before assembling your front and back together.
You can also make small hearts and add a ribbon to hang them as decoration or even slip in cedar balls, lavender, ... to hang on your wardrobe hangers!
Creativity is the only limit, so have fun!
In any case, we really enjoyed making our decorations and we’re already thinking about Easter 😊. Do you have any ideas? Feel free to share them in the comments!
