Sewing your pennant garland

On the occasion of the opening weekend of our shop, we wanted to give a festive look connected to our textile passion and our sewing courses... the pennant garland was a must!

With our 7m display window, there was a lot of work! So, we thought we could make a little tutorial to make yours... whether for a party, decorating a child's room, ...

This tutorial is simple and aimed at sewing beginners. It can also be done with children.

Let's get started!

Necessary supplies

To make your pennant garland, you will need:

- fabrics: preferably cotton poplins. You can use your scraps of various fabrics.

- 20mm plain or patterned bias tape according to your preference

- matching thread to your bias tape

For fabrics, you can create color gradients or combine colors of all kinds.

The pattern

The pattern is very simple because it is just a simple triangle. It can be adjusted in size if you want very large pennants or smaller ones.

To make your pennants, you need to draw an isosceles triangle, meaning the two long sides of the triangle have the same length.

How to draw it?

1. Determine the length of the base of the triangle you want.

For your information, ours have a 19cm base.

2. Mark the middle of the base, and determine the length of your pennants.

For your information, ours are 20cm high

3. Draw the triangle, from the base to the top

4. Add a 1cm seam allowance around the triangle

Tip: a Japanese ruler is really handy for drawing this kind of pattern 😊 you can find them in our physical store.

Ta-da, the pattern is drawn!

The tutorial - the steps

1. Pin your pattern onto the fabric - pay attention to the direction of the prints if there are any - and cut out triangles. Each pennant will have two triangles; one for each side.

2. Assemble the two sides of the triangle right sides together, stitch at 1cm

3. Cut off the tip of the triangle

4. Turn the triangle inside out and press

5 Repeat the first 4 steps as many times as you want pennants

6. Arrange the triangles in the order you want

7. Place the bias tape folded over along the base of each triangle; you can leave a space between the pennants or join them one after the other

We chose to place them side by side without space.

Leave some length before and after the pennants so you can tie a knot to hang them.

8. Stitch from the beginning of the bias tape to the end

9. Ta-da, now all you have to do is attach your garland!

There you go, your pennant garland is made! You can have fun customizing it by adding embroidery or letters to create the name of the child for whom you are making it or the celebration for which you are creating it!

Beautiful sewing and happy stitching!
