The  Ivy blouse will charm you with its batwing sleeves. A  loose and flowing cut yet  structured by pretty gathers that highlight the shoulder. It’s the little detail that stands out for  a guaranteed “wow” effect.

Batwing sleeves are sleeves that start at the waist and are one with the bodice of the garment. So, there is no seam on the blouse. When making the Ivy blouse, you will learn the little assembly trick that still allows you to make gathers on the shoulder.

Making the gathers is actually the main challenge of the blouse, which remains  a simple pattern that sews up quickly.

That’s why  I chose to finish the neckline with a facing. It ensures a neat finish and easy assembly.

For finishing, you can make a topstitch along the button placket and around the neckline. But this topstitch is not necessarily required, as the facings are held on one side by the buttons, and on the other by the buttonholes. I did not make them on all my versions.

Regarding the sleeves, you can make the Ivy blouse with 4/5 sleeves that reach above the wrist or with 3/4 sleeves, shorter, reaching below the elbow.
You may notice that the 3/4 version gives the impression of more fullness since the sleeve shape is the same and the wrist is just sewn a little higher. So there are more gathers and a sense of volume. For the cuff, I chose to make a slit with a facing to change from the usual tear-away slit often found on blouses and shirts.
Making the Ivy blouse will therefore allow you to learn how to make it.

The Ivy blouse is perfect made from flowing fabrics. Viscose or silk will give the batwing sleeves a lovely drape. So you can’t go wrong sewing Ivy in a soft and flowing fabric. That’s what I especially recommend if you’re not used to wearing garments with very full sleeves. However, I made 2 versions of the Ivy blouse in poplin and I like them a lot. Poplin gives a more structured look to the blouse and adds volume.
