A Japanese-style blouse: I sew the Chagall blouse "les patronnes" in Japanese fabrics

When we added the brand Les patronnes to our range of patterns, I immediately fell for the Chagall blouse/dress!

With its Japanese look created by the waist belt, I pictured it well as a blouse version in my wardrobe.

So without hesitation, it was time to get started.

Ready to discover my first blouse of 2025?

It's this way!

The pattern

The Chagall dress or blouse is a very simple and quick sewing pattern! Top or dress, long sleeves or three-quarter sleeves, there are already 4 variations available to you!

Its clean shape, without zipper or buttons, features a pretty neckline and delicate sleeves.

The waist highlighted by its wide belt will showcase your feminine curves.

Its Japanese-style knot gives it an elegant contemporary touch.

Information to sew this pattern

Chagall is available in downloadable PDF format, to print in A4 or A3, or A0 on our website.
It is available from size 34 to 48.

Chagall is a very accessible pattern so even if you are a beginner, you can sew it without difficulties. More advanced sewers will enjoy quickly sewing a little blouse or dress that stands out!

Seam allowances are included (1 cm for seams, 3 cm for hems)

In the seamstress's basket

To sew Chagall, you will need fabrics.

The pattern makers advise us: jersey but also woven: crepe, tencel, viscose, fine wool...

Poplin, cotton satin, and linen are also suitable. It is necessary not to undersize the pattern.

To complete your basket, you will need to add to sew Chagall:

- a spool of matching thread
- lightweight fusible interfacing

- matching serger cones (optional)

My supplies

Given the Japanese-inspired look of the pattern, I really wanted to make it in Japanese fabrics.

So I went to open my reserve drawer and pulled out a Japanese fabric that was waiting for its moment!

I selected a gütermann burgundy thread and serger cones.

Finally, I selected H200 fusible interfacing for the facings.

Technical stitches

By sewing Chagall, you will learn to:
- sew bust darts
- create ties / waistband
- make facings
- sew hems

Chagall is classified by the brand "Les patronnes" as intermediate level. For my part, I find that Chagall can be sewn by a resourceful and/or motivated beginner.

Sewing experience

I enjoyed sewing this simple and quick blouse which, thanks to its waistband, makes it very original!

I sewed it in half a day.

I assembled the PDF pattern late morning, and in about thirty minutes I had cut size 36 on paper, which matched my measurements.

Be careful not to undersize this model; if you hesitate between two sizes, take the larger one.

I find the ease is not great so be careful not to choose a size too small 😊.

I cut my pieces in about thirty minutes.

For those who hesitate to start with just the instruction booklet, Les patronnes made an assembly video. I’m putting it just below.

In the afternoon, I first interfaced the facings and sewed my bust darts. I then overlocked all the necessary raw edges before assembling with the serger. Then, I assembled the pieces. I made the ties. I found the method proposed by Les patronnes very nice because you have to cut the waistband piece in two. You get two "trapezoids" allowing you to make the ties. I then sewed and assembled them. All that was left was to set in the sleeves. I chose to sew them set in rather than "flat" as proposed by Les patronnes.  Finally, I made the hems at the bottom of the body and sleeves.  I took 3h to assemble my blouse. Total project time: 4h
