A Japanese-style blouse: I sew the Chagall blouse "les patronnes" in Japanese fabrics

When we added the Les patronnes brand to our pattern range, I immediately fell for the Chagall blouse/dress!

With its Japanese-inspired look created by the waist belt, I pictured it well as a blouse in my wardrobe.

So without hesitation, it was time to get started.

Ready to discover my first blouse of 2025?

This way!

The pattern

The Chagall dress or blouse is a very simple and quick sewing pattern! Top or dress, long sleeves or three-quarter sleeves, there are already 4 variations available to you!

Its clean shape, without zippers or buttons, features a pretty neckline and delicate sleeves.

The waist, highlighted by its wide belt, will showcase your feminine curves.

Its Japanese-style tie gives it an elegant contemporary touch.

Information for sewing this pattern

Chagall is available as a downloadable PDF format, to print in A4 or A3, or A0 on our website.
It is available in sizes 34 to 48.

Chagall is a very accessible pattern, so even if you are a beginner, you can sew it without difficulty. More advanced sewers will enjoy quickly making a stylish blouse or dress!

Seam allowances are included (1 cm for seams, 3 cm for hems)

In the sewer’s basket

To sew Chagall, you will need fabric.

The designers recommend: jersey but also woven fabrics: crepe, tencel, viscose, fine wool...

Poplin, cotton satin, and linen also work well. It is important not to size down the pattern.

To complete your basket, you will need to add for sewing Chagall:

- a spool of matching thread
- lightweight fusible interfacing

- matching serger cones (optional)

My supplies

Given the Japanese-inspired look of the pattern, I really wanted to make it in Japanese fabric.

So I opened my reserve drawer and took out a Japanese fabric that was waiting for its moment!

I chose a burgundy gütermann thread and serger cones.

Finally, I selected H200 fusible interfacing for the facings.

Technical stitches

By sewing Chagall, you will learn to:
- sew bust clips
- creating ties / waistband
- making facings
- sewing hems

Chagall is classified by the brand "Les patronnes" as intermediate level. For my part, I think Chagall can be sewn by a resourceful and/or motivated beginner.

Sewing experience

I enjoyed sewing this simple and quick blouse, which, thanks to its waistband, makes it very original!

I sewed it in half a day.

I assembled the PDF pattern late morning, and in about thirty minutes I had cut size 36 on paper, which matched my measurements.

Be careful not to size down this model; if you're between two sizes, choose the larger one.

I find the ease is not very generous, so be careful not to choose a size that's too small 😊.

I cut my pieces in about thirty minutes.

For those who hesitate to start with just the instruction booklet, the pattern makers made an assembly video. I'll put it just below.

In the afternoon, I first interfaced the facings and sewed my bust darts. Then I overlocked all the necessary raw edges before assembling with the serger. Next, I assembled the pieces. I made the ties. I found the method proposed by the pattern makers very clever because you have to cut the waistband piece in two. You get two "trapezoids" that allow you to make the ties. I then sewed and assembled them. All that was left was to set in the sleeves. I chose to sew them in set rather than "flat" as suggested by the pattern makers.  Finally, I hemmed the bottom of the body and the sleeves.  I took 3 hours to assemble my blouse. Total project time: 4 hours

So isn't my Chagall blouse with a Japanese twist beautiful?

Daring with color and patterns allows you to create lovely pieces from simple but striking patterns! I'm thrilled!
