When I learned that Rebecca Deraeck was going to release a guide on the composition, specifics, and uses of different sewing fabrics, I eagerly awaited its release. And as soon as I received it, I devoured it ;-)
Rebecca is well known in the sewing community, and I was lucky to meet her in Brussels where we were able to talk about our shared passion.
Indeed, she is passionate about sharing her love of fabrics while having an informed view on the ecological issues of the textile industry.
So for her to make all the research she did over several years accessible to us was a wonderful sharing for me!

This book answers the big questions that at one time or another we all ask ourselves as sewists, especially:
- Which fabric for which use? How to be sure that this fabric will suit my project?
- How is a fabric made? Understanding the raw materials used, types of yarns, manufacturing steps...
- What are the main types of fabrics and their characteristics?
- How to improve your knowledge of fabrics?
Thanks to Rebecca's writing and her simplification of technical concepts, I learned a lot and I already know I will eagerly dive back into her pages in the future.
What I enjoyed most in this reading is Rebecca's effort to present theoretical materials with lightness and sometimes even humor; this also helps to progress quickly through the reading and retain the concepts.
Another major aspect of this book that I appreciated is all the knowledge Rebecca shares about fabric manufacturing methods. It has been important to me for several years not to consume fast fashion because it is a polluting industry. So I wanted a thoughtful homemade wardrobe with fabrics whose production is a bit less polluting.
For example, I haven't worn 100% polyester clothes for a long time; I prefer natural fibers.
It's the same approach I take in the shop where I try to offer fabrics that are a bit more environmentally friendly.
Rebecca's book confirms my idea, and I will continue trying to maintain a balance between textile technicality, price, and the environment to offer you quality fabrics at reasonable prices.
If you also want to learn more about fabrics, I really encourage you to buy Rebecca's book at good bookstores or through online shops. It is sold for 11.95 euros.
