Which parents or grandparents have never experienced the drama of losing the favorite pacifier (or tutute in Belgium) during a walk? To avoid this kind of mishap, I invite you to discover this little tutorial to make your own pacifier clip. This tutorial is accessible to complete beginners and can be a fun little project to start sewing. It’s also a lovely homemade gift to make for a birth.
For those who don’t know, the pacifier clip safely attaches the pacifier to the child’s clothes, so no more lost pacifiers and no more drama... You can also use them to attach a comforter using the same principle.
NB: I won’t go into the pros and cons of pacifier use in children here, you’re primarily on a sewing blog...
In the seamstress’s basket
In your basket, you will need:
- one or two fabrics of your choice (preferably cotton, poplin) with childlike patterns. Since you need very little fabric (2 pieces: 22cm*4cm), you can use a scrap (this is very useful if you’re making a birth kit with a sleeping bag, a bath cape... you’ll have plenty left to make your pacifier clip)
- matching threads
- a pacifier clip
- two resin kam or metal snaps
- a clip to attach your snaps or a hammer
- your sewing machine
- The basic sewing kit: scissors, pins...

The tutorial
1. Cut two rectangles of 22 cm by 4 cm from your fabric. You can use a single fabric, in which case your pacifier clip will be the same color on both sides, or use two coordinating fabrics to create two different faces. For my part, I chose the ladybug fabric available in the shop, to match the TAO overalls I am making.
2. Pin the two fabric rectangles right sides together.
3. Sew around the edges of the rectangles 1 cm from the edge, leaving an opening of about 5 cm on one of the lengths.
4. Trim the corners (= cut the corners! without cutting into the seam!) and turn your work right side out through the opening you left. Make sure to push out the corners well; they should be nicely shaped.
5. Close the 5 cm opening (either by hand over the 5 cm for the neatest and least visible finish, or topstitch the seam allowance by machine)
6. Position one snap piece 3.5 cm from one end of your rectangle and the other piece 1 cm from the end. Mark with chalk (see the snap installation tutorial here).
7. Repeat step 6 on the other side of the rectangle.
8. Slide the pacifier clip onto one side and close the snap, on the other side slide the pacifier and close the snap again.
9. Ta-da, all that's left is to gift or hang your creation!
